SHISO CITY, Japan, Jan. 23, 2026 — Shiso City, located in the central-western part of Hyogo Prefecture and just a 90-minute drive from Kyoto and Osaka, is emerging as a captivating new spot for nature-centered travel. The city boasts vast forests, a rich fermentation heritage, and a community-driven revival of its historic forest railway, positioning it as a destination for sustainable tourism. Recently, representatives from the Shiso City Tourism Association shared insights into the city’s unique tourism offerings.

Despite its somewhat challenging name and relative obscurity even within Japan, Shiso City is becoming increasingly appealing to both domestic and international tourists in search of authentic and sustainable travel experiences. This article highlights the new tourism resources that Shiso City has to offer.

With approximately 90% of its land area covered in forests, Shiso City is aptly described as a “Forest Kingdom.” Forestry has been a cornerstone of the local economy and lifestyle for generations. From the Taisho era to the late Showa period, forest railways played a crucial role in timber transportation through the region’s mountain valleys. Today, these lush forest resources are being repurposed not just as beautiful landscapes but as integral elements of experiential tourism.

One notable development in this initiative is the restoration of a tourist forest railway by a community organization, which took place in the summer of 2023 at Forest Station Haga. Utilizing a diesel locomotive that previously served in erosion control and forestry projects, this railway features approximately 678 meters of track and operates regularly on weekends, offering visitors a chance to engage meaningfully with the history of Shiso City’s forestry sector. The area also provides hot spring baths, accommodation options, and a nearby roadside station where local specialties can be purchased.

Moreover, Shiso City has been recognized as one of Hyogo Prefecture’s first Forest Therapy Bases. Among its highlights is Akasai Gorge, often likened to the renowned Oirase Stream in Aomori Prefecture. Former railway paths have now transformed into therapy trails, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the serene surroundings marked by waterfalls, clear streams, and towering trees. Seasonal scenery in Shiso City enhances the experience, with destinations like Fukuchi Gorge, celebrated by acclaimed Japanese author Seiko Tanabe, and the Onzui area, which still features remnants of the old forest railways.

Shiso City’s growing reputation as a hub for sustainable travel blends its rich natural resources with cultural heritage, inviting visitors to explore its hidden charms while promoting eco-friendly tourism practices.
