Shields vs. Daniels: A Fight That Signals a New Era for Women’s Boxing!

Claressa Shields is preparing for one of the most significant fights of her career as she defends her undisputed heavyweight championship against Lani Daniels at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, July 26. This fight not only holds great importance for Shields but also represents a milestone for women’s boxing.

Ahead of the match, a press conference on July 23 showcased Shields’ dedication not just to her fight, but to promoting undercard fights and her contributions to the community. This event contrasted with a previous press conference during which both fighters exchanged intense banter. Daniels’ coach, John Conway, had previously hinted at a strategy involving Muay Thai punches, but at this latest press event, he retracted those statements, stating, “We’re coming with boxing punches because we are boxers.”

Shields, aware of her status as the favorite, emphasized the importance of not underestimating her opponent. With a touch of humor, she remarked, “I cannot let you beat me up!” referring to the presence of her family and supporters at the event, which adds to the stakes of the fight.

The fight card is bolstered by talents on the undercard, which highlights the growth of women’s boxing. Notably, Samantha Worthington is set to fight Victoire Piteau for the vacant WBA women’s junior welterweight interim title, while Caroline Veyre will face Licia Boudersa for the featherweight title.

Additionally, the card features the return of former WBC super welterweight champion Tony Harrison, a Detroit native, who will take on middleweight contender Edward Ulloa Diaz. Harrison, who last fought in 2023, expressed a new approach to his career, stating, “I’m letting my hands do the talking.”

Remarkably, the event has been sold out, with over 70% of tickets purchased by women, highlighting a shift in audience demographics in boxing. Shields’ manager, Mark Taffet, noted, “We’ve never seen women like this before in boxing… This is women’s boxing’s time.”

The undercard fights commence at 5:30 p.m., with Shields and Daniels expected to enter the ring at 8 p.m. This event could play a pivotal role in elevating women’s participation and visibility in the sport, promising an exciting future for female boxers and fans alike.
