Sheinelle Jones is set to return to NBC’s Today this week, nearly four months after the death of her husband from glioblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer.

Jones will rejoin the morning show on Friday, Sept. 5, with co-anchor Savannah Guthrie announcing the return on Tuesday. Guthrie also noted that she and Jones recorded a personal interview that will air on Friday.

The longtime Today contributor, who co-hosts Today’s third hour, had been off the show for most of the year as her husband, Uche Ojeh, fought glioblastoma. He passed away in May at age 45.

“We’ve all seen how she and her family have faced an unimaginable loss, and we sat down together recently to talk about how she’s found the strength to carry on,” Guthrie said. “She calls this experience a beautiful nightmare, and she has insights on grief that are deeply moving. She also has a hopeful message for anyone facing their own struggles, and we’re eager to share it. We can’t wait to welcome Sheinelle back home.”

Jones has been with Today for more than a decade, beginning with the weekend edition in 2014. She was named co-host of the show’s third hour in 2019, working alongside Dylan Dreyer, Craig Melvin and other NBC News talent. Melvin joined Guthrie as Today’s co-anchor earlier this year.

Additional context: Jones’s return is seen as a significant moment for viewers who have followed her through a challenging personal period, and it comes as the show continues to adjust its on-air lineup. The forthcoming interview with Guthrie may offer a candid perspective on grief and resilience that resonates with many families coping with loss. The vibe around her comeback is hopeful, focusing on strength, remembrance, and renewed engagement with the program.
