Sheckler’s Epic Comeback: X Games Returns to Utah!

SALT LAKE CITY — The X Games is making its debut in Utah from June 27-29, hosted at Utah State Fairpark. This prestigious action sports event will showcase exciting competitions in Moto X, BMX, and skateboarding. A highlight of the occasion is the return of legendary skateboarder Ryan Sheckler, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the X Games.

Sheckler burst onto the national stage at just 13 years old when he clinched a gold medal at the X Games in 2003. Now at 35, the accomplished skater has a career spanning over two decades and is a proud father of two. Reflecting on his early days at the X Games, he expressed, “It’s super exciting to have my career pretty much start out at 13 years old at X Games… To be a part of that number… to have my wife and kids watch me compete is surreal.”

After a hiatus from competition since 2017, during which he battled multiple injuries, Sheckler is now feeling rejuvenated both physically and mentally. He attributed his newfound vigor to a successful surgery in January that resolved a long-standing toe injury. “I actually feel really good again… just my attitude around skate feels good,” he said.

Navigating fame and its challenges from a young age, Sheckler acknowledged his past mistakes and emphasized prioritizing his health and happiness. He openly discusses his Christian faith and how embracing it has steered his life in a positive direction. “I definitely got closer in my relationship with Christ… I take pride in where my life is now,” he remarked.

Sheckler aims to inspire others in the skateboarding community, advocating for positive living and openness about faith. “I hope it is a great encouragement to people… I want to promote skateboarding and how fun it is, but also if people want to talk about Jesus Christ, I’m down to talk to them about it.”

As he prepares to compete in the Skateboard Street event on Saturday, Sheckler remains optimistic about his performance despite the years away from competition. “I wouldn’t call myself rusty… The second I get there it all clicks back pretty quickly,” he noted regarding his ability to adapt. While aiming for a podium finish is a goal, he emphasized his primary focus is to simply enjoy the competition and shine a positive light in the skateboarding scene.

This event not only represents an exciting opportunity for Sheckler to return to competition but also serves as a celebration of the growth and camaraderie within the action sports community.
