Shawn Levy has provided fans with an enticing glimpse of his upcoming Lucasfilm venture, “Star Wars: Starfighter,” through his Instagram post. The post, featuring Ryan Gosling and actor Flynn Gray on set in the Mediterranean Sea, hints at the grandeur and scope of this new addition to the Star Wars universe. Levy, known for his work on “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” expressed his excitement with the caption, “Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea #Starfighter.”
“Star Wars: Starfighter,” scripted by Jonathan Tropper, features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams, alongside Ryan Gosling. Significantly, this film is set outside the main Skywalker saga, taking place five years after the events of “Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker.”
Scheduled for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027, the film sees Levy teaming up with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy as producers. Meanwhile, the executive production team includes Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen.
Before “Star Wars: Starfighter” graces the big screen, audiences can look forward to “Mandalorian & Grogu,” slated for release on May 22 next year, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Notably, Disney holds the record for the highest Memorial Day weekend opening with this past summer’s blockbuster “Lilo & Stitch,” which achieved a remarkable $146 million domestic opening, eventually crossing the $1 billion mark globally.
Historically, Star Wars films have been formidable at the box office. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” boasts the fourth highest domestic opening at $247.9 million and ranked fifth worldwide with $528.9 million, unadjusted for currency fluctuations and inflation. Meanwhile, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” occupies the tenth spot for global openings with $450.8 million, and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” comes in at number 27 with a $373.5 million global debut.
The anticipation surrounding “Star Wars: Starfighter” suggests it may continue this tradition of box office success, expanding the beloved franchise beyond its familiar storyline while capturing the imaginations of audiences worldwide.
