Shawn Hatosy Returns to The Pitt as Dr. Jack Abbot for Season 2, Extending Behind-the-Camera Roles
Emmy-nominated actor Shawn Hatosy is back in HBO Max’s The Pitt, reprising his role as Dr. Jack Abbot in a recurring capacity for Season 2. In addition to his acting return, Hatosy will direct an episode of the new season, marking his return to directing after his work on TNT’s Animal Kingdom.
The Pitt, from creator R. Scott Gemmill and producer John Wells, follows frontline healthcare professionals at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s emergency department. The show uses a real-time, hour-by-hour format to track the medical cases and personal crises that arise as staff navigate crowds of patients with limited resources.
Hatosy described the opportunity as a dream project on which to work behind the camera, comparing it to a chef in a premier kitchen who benefits from top-tier writing, strong characters, and a high-energy, meticulously crafted world. He also noted that viewing the characters through Abbot’s eyes will enrich his directing process and deepen his collaboration with a trusted team.
Leading the ensemble is Noah Wyle, who serves as an executive producer and writer. The cast also includes Katherine LaNasa, Taylor Dearden, Patrick Ball, Isa Briones, Fiona Dourif, Supriya Ganesh, Shabana Azeez, and Gerran Howell. Season 2 introduces Sepideh Moafi as a series regular, with Charles Baker, Irene Choi, Laëtitia Hollard, Lucas Iverson, and Lawrence Robinson joining in recurring roles.
John Wells Productions produces The Pitt in association with Warner Bros. Television, with JWP under an overall deal at WB. Gemmill, Wells, Wyle, Michael Hissrich, Erin Jontow, and Simran Baidwan serve as executive producers.
Hatosy earned his first Emmy nomination in July for his portrayal of Dr. Abbot, the combat veteran and attending physician in emergency medicine at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The series scored 13 Emmy nominations for its first season.
The Pitt marks the fifth collaboration between Hatosy and Wells, following ER, Southland, Animal Kingdom, and Rescue HI-Surf. Season 1 unfolds over a single day, while Season 2 picks up 10 months after the finale, centering on Fourth of July weekend. It has been revealed that Abbot is an amputee with a prosthetic leg, though additional backstory remains to be explored.
Hatosy’s work on Animal Kingdom included directing four episodes in Season 3, and he is repped by Paradigm and Trademark Talent.
