Shasta County’s Health and Human Services Agency, specifically the Public Health Branch, is actively investigating a confirmed case of measles in the region. In an effort to mitigate the spread of this highly contagious virus, the infected individual is currently in isolation until the end of their infectious period. Public Health officials are reaching out to individuals who may have been exposed during the patient’s 8-day contagious period.

As part of their response, HHSA staff are coordinating with several local venues to contact visitors and employees who were present during specific times when the infected person was also there. The sites include an outdoor capture the flag event at Highland Neighborhood Park on January 23, Osaka Sushi restaurant, and locations such as Costco and Churn Creek HealthCare clinic on January 24 and January 28.

Anyone who spent time at these locations is encouraged to call the Shasta County Measles Information Line at (530) 638-5580 to speak with Public Health representatives. They emphasize the importance of checking vaccination records and ensuring that individuals have received two doses of the measles vaccine, which is essential for adequate immunity against the virus.

Public Health has reiterated safe practices for those exhibiting symptoms of measles, including a high fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis, and a distinctive rash that begins on the face. They advise that individuals displaying symptoms should avoid public spaces and contact a healthcare provider for advice.

The measles vaccine, typically administered as part of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) immunization, provides strong protection when two doses have been received. Public Health encourages adults vaccinated prior to the 1990s—who may have received only one dose—to consider discussing with their healthcare provider whether receiving a second dose is advisable.

Despite the current situation, public health officials maintain that the locations where exposure occurred remain safe to visit, as there are no ongoing concerns regarding these places. This collaborative effort is aimed at ensuring community health and safety amidst the measles case investigation. Public Health continues to monitor the situation and encourages residents to stay informed about vaccinations and health guidelines related to measles.
