Sharks Make Waves: New Signings Set to Transform Roster

The San Jose Sharks have signed free agent defenseman John Klingberg to a one-year deal valued at $4 million, as reported by Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. Klingberg’s recent performance has significantly raised his stock, especially following a strong postseason with the Edmonton Oilers, where he demonstrated his ability as a smooth-skating puck mover with keen vision on breakouts.

At 32 years old, Klingberg faced uncertainty after undergoing double hip resurfacing surgery in the fall of 2023, which sidelined him for an entire year. He made his return in January, 446 days after his last game, during which he logged one goal and three assists in 11 regular-season games. His playoff performance further alleviated doubts; in 19 games, while he also recorded just one goal and three assists, he contributed to the speed and efficiency of Edmonton’s transition game.

Although Klingberg may not be the commanding playmaker he was during his peak with the Dallas Stars—where he tallied 67 points and received Norris Trophy votes in 2018—his experience and skills still make him a valuable asset to the Sharks’ blue line.

In addition, the Sharks secured forward Philipp Kurashev on a one-year contract worth $1.2 million. Together, these signings signal San Jose’s efforts to bolster their roster as they aim for a more competitive season ahead.

The Sharks’ commitment to acquiring both seasoned defenders and emerging talent reflects a strategic approach to building a more resilient and effective team.
