Dmitry Orlov has officially joined the San Jose Sharks, signing a two-year contract worth $13 million, averaging $6.5 million annually. The 33-year-old defenseman, known for his strong two-way play, tallied 28 points during the previous regular season with the Carolina Hurricanes, contributing six goals and 22 assists over 76 games. In the playoffs, he added four assists in 15 games.
Sharks general manager Mike Grier expressed enthusiasm about Orlov’s addition to the team, highlighting his physicality, versatility, and extensive NHL experience, which includes a Stanley Cup championship with the Washington Capitals in 2018. “His Stanley Cup championship pedigree is a valuable addition to our team,” Grier noted.
Orlov’s signing follows the recent acquisition of another veteran defenseman, John Klingberg, who was brought on board with a one-year, $4 million deal earlier this week. This move indicates the Sharks’ commitment to strengthening their defensive roster.
Orlov has a decorated career, having been selected in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft by the Capitals. He has accumulated 327 points (76 goals, 251 assists) across 867 regular-season games for the Capitals, Boston Bruins, and Hurricanes and has contributed significantly in the playoffs with 41 points in 107 games.
The Sharks appear to be making strategic moves in bolstering their team for the upcoming season, enhancing their chances for success through the addition of experienced players like Orlov and Klingberg.
