Sharks Bid Farewell to a Franchise Legend: Vlasic Enters Unconditional Waivers

The San Jose Sharks have officially placed defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic on unconditional waivers as part of a buyout process. After 19 seasons with the team, Vlasic has one year remaining on his contract. The 38-year-old blue-liner has faced a series of injuries over the last two seasons, limiting him to just 27 games last season, where he managed to score one goal and accumulate three points.

General Manager Mike Grier emphasized the emotional weight of this decision, saying, “This was a difficult decision to make today, with how much Marc has meant to the San Jose organization for 19 years.” He reflected on Vlasic’s early days with the Sharks, recalling how he knew he’d develop into a top defenseman. Grier noted Vlasic’s impressive tenure in the NHL, highlighting his role as a premier shutdown defenseman, often tasked with covering the league’s top players effectively.

Vlasic was originally drafted 35th overall by the Sharks in 2005 and has since played 1,323 games, amassing 84 goals and 379 points. He was instrumental in the Sharks’ journey to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016, where he tallied a goal and 12 assists during the playoffs, averaging over 23 minutes of ice time per game.

In addition to his NHL contributions, Vlasic has represented Canada on several international stages, winning a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics and securing silver in the World Championship in 2009 and 2017, as well as a gold medal at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Following the buyout, the Sharks expect to gain $2.33 million in salary cap relief. Grier concluded his statement by expressing gratitude for Vlasic’s dedication to the organization, stating, “He will go down not only as one of the best defensemen in franchise history, but one of the best players.”

This move marks a bittersweet transition for both Vlasic and the Sharks, paving the way for potential new opportunities while honoring a distinguished legacy. The franchise and its fans will remember Vlasic as a player who significantly contributed to its history and success.
