Alabama teenager Lulu Gribbin appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to share her compelling story of survival and recovery over a year after a shark attack off Seacrest Beach, Florida, which cost her a hand and a leg. Now 15, Lulu recounted the harrowing experience but highlighted her determination to triumph over the challenges it brought.
During her conversation with co-anchor Michael Strahan, Lulu described the chilling moment when she encountered the shark and her instinctive reaction to swim away as quickly as she could. Accompanied by her twin sister Ellie and mother Ann Blair at the time, the beach trip turned into a life-altering event.
Overcoming severe injuries, Lulu dedicated herself to recovery at OrthoCarolina’s Limb Loss Recovery Center. Under the care of Dr. Bryan Loeffler, she underwent specialized procedures rerouting nerve endings to muscles, easing limb pain, and facilitating control of electro-prosthetics. She also became a pioneer in using investigational virtual reality therapy aimed at alleviating phantom limb pain. Dr. Glenn Gaston explained how the immersive technology helps patients by replicating the sensation of using their missing limbs.
Back in Alabama, Lulu continues to defy expectations. With a custom prosthetic and a golf attachment, she has resumed playing golf and has eagerly taken up slalom water skiing. Recently, she began running with a specialized prosthetic and expressed her ambition to compete in the Paralympics for track. “Why not?” she pondered optimistically on GMA.
Lulu’s courage has translated into advocacy and innovation. She champions “Lulu’s Law,” a proposed federal alert system to notify beachgoers of nearby shark attacks, modeled after an Amber Alert. The U.S. Senate recently approved the bill, which now awaits passage in the House of Representatives. Additionally, she launched the Lulu Strong Foundation to promote access to advanced treatments similar to those that aided her recovery.
Her mother, Blair, emphasized the importance of fostering innovation and research in amputee treatments, striving to extend the advanced care Lulu received to others. Lulu’s strength draws from her deep faith and supportive family, which she credits for her resilience.
