Shaquille Leonard to Retire as Colt on One-Day Contract

The Indianapolis Colts have announced that linebacker Shaquille Leonard is signing a one-day contract to retire with the team, marking the end of a notable chapter in his football career. Known affectionately as “The Maniac,” Leonard departs the NFL at just 30 years of age, having experienced a significant impact in his early years with the Colts before injuries led to a decline in his performance.

Leonard, who was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of South Carolina State, made a remarkable entry into the league. He quickly earned recognition by being named the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2018. During his career, he was selected to the AP All-Pro team four times and was a three-time Pro Bowler, establishing himself as one of the premier linebackers in the game.

Throughout his six seasons in the league, Leonard played in 75 games for the Colts and Eagles, accumulating impressive statistics that include 637 total tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, 17 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions, and 31 pass deflections. Despite facing multiple back injuries that ultimately led to challenges on the field, his earlier contributions to the Colts remain celebrated by fans and teammates alike.

Leonard’s tenure with the Colts included entering the final year of a four-year rookie contract worth $7.2 million before he signed a significant five-year extension worth $99 million. However, the Colts made the difficult decision to cut him midseason in 2023, after which he briefly joined the Philadelphia Eagles to wrap up the year.

As Leonard officially retires as a Colt, he leaves behind a legacy as a fierce competitor and a beloved figure in Indianapolis, where his contributions to the team and impact on the game will not be forgotten. His story serves as a reminder of the highs and lows inherent in professional sports, celebrating the accomplishments while recognizing the challenges athletes can face.
