Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, emphasizing that Democrats represent the “party of real freedom.” He reflected on the nation’s history, noting that 250 years ago in Philadelphia, a group of patriots declared independence and began a journey toward self-determination.
Shapiro criticized former President Donald Trump, describing him as “a man with no guardrails.” He asserted that while Trump claims to advocate for freedom, his actions do not align with true liberty. “It’s not freedom to dictate what books our children can read,” Shapiro remarked, adding that “it’s not freedom to control women’s decisions about their own bodies,” and highlighting that “it sure as hell isn’t freedom to allow people to vote while also deciding the outcome.”
The keynote address was delivered by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who accepted the Democratic vice presidential nomination. Other notable speakers included former President Bill Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The theme for the third day of the convention was “A Fight for Our Freedoms,” focusing on how Vice President Kamala Harris will defend American freedoms, while casting Trump as a threat. Harris is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination on the final day of the convention.
Shapiro was initially considered a strong candidate for Harris’ running mate before Walz was chosen. Following the announcement, Shapiro expressed his support for Walz, calling him “a strong addition to the ticket.” During a recent campaign event at Philadelphia’s Liacouras Center, Walz praised Shapiro, stating, “Pennsylvania, I know you know this, but my God, what a treasure you have in Josh Shapiro.” Shapiro affirmed his commitment to the state, saying, “I love being your governor.”
