Former Ba and national football player Shalen Lal has been appointed as the head coach of Nadi FC for the upcoming FMF Inter-District Championship (IDC) at the 4R Stadium in Govind Park, Ba. Lal recently returned from Australia and wasted no time, heading directly to the Nadi FC training field for a session on Wednesday afternoon.
“I will be coaching Nadi for the IDC. I have previously been with them, and when they approached me, I agreed. With my coaching license, I will endeavor to do my best,” Lal stated. He acknowledged the limited time before the tournament but expressed confidence in the young players and dedicated officials within the team. “Nadi will enter this year’s tournament as the underdogs,” he added.
Despite a disappointing performance during the league, Lal aims to enhance the team’s competitive spirit, emphasizing the importance of players representing the green jersey with pride and passion. Mohammed Mohin, president of the Nadi Football Association, expressed optimism about Lal’s leadership, believing it brings fresh energy and direction as they prepare for Fiji’s premier football tournament. “Shalen Lal is a proven leader who understands the local game at the highest level,” Mohin remarked.
In an effort to strengthen the squad, the association has submitted requests for clearance of several overseas players through the International Transfer Certificate process. Nadi FC is set to commence its Group A campaign against defending champions Extra Supermarket Labasa FC at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, October 7. The team will continue their group stage matches the following days against Power Volt Suva FC and 4R Electric Lautoka FC.
This appointment and the preparation for the IDC reflect a determined effort by Nadi FC to improve upon past performances and rejuvenate the team’s dynamics for a stronger showing in the tournament.
