Former Ba and national football player Shalen Lal has stepped into the role of head coach for Nadi FC as they gear up for the upcoming FMF Inter-District Championship (IDC) at the 4R Stadium in Govind Park, Ba. Lal’s appointment comes after his recent return from Australia, and he immediately dove into coaching by attending a training session at the Nadi FC field on Wednesday afternoon.
Lal expressed his commitment to the team, saying, “I will be coaching Nadi for the IDC. I have previously been with them, and when they approached me, I agreed. With my coaching license, I will endeavor to do my best.” Although the time leading up to the tournament is short, he voiced confidence in the young talent and committed officials within the squad. “Nadi will enter this year’s tournament as the underdogs,” he noted, acknowledging the challenges ahead.
Despite Nadi FC’s lackluster performance during the league, Lal is determined to boost the team’s competitive spirit. He stressed the significance of players wearing the green jersey with pride and passion. Mohammed Mohin, president of the Nadi Football Association, shared his optimism regarding Lal’s leadership, seeing it as a source of fresh energy and direction for the club as they prepare for Fiji’s premier football tournament. “Shalen Lal is a proven leader who understands the local game at the highest level,” he said.
In a strategic move to enhance the team, the association has initiated the clearance process for several overseas players through the International Transfer Certificate. Nadi FC is set to kick off its Group A campaign against defending champions Extra Supermarket Labasa FC at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, October 7. The team will continue its group stage matches against Power Volt Suva FC and 4R Electric Lautoka FC in the following days.
Lal’s appointment marks a significant step for Nadi FC as it looks to improve past performances and invigorate the team’s dynamics for a stronger showing in the tournament. With Lal at the forefront, there is a renewed sense of optimism for success in the IDC, as the team seeks to channel the support of its devoted fans. The future looks promising for Nadi FC as they aim to make a significant impact in the championship.
