The Department of Environment has confirmed a sewage spill into a stream in Nabua, Suva, following a public report made on the afternoon of December 30, 2025.
Authorities were alerted around 3:43 PM after locals spotted a bluish discoloration in the stream beneath the Jerusalem Road bridge. Environmental officers were quickly dispatched to evaluate the situation.
Investigations identified the source of the discharge as an underground culvert located near the Nabua Sewerage Pump Station. To assess the extent of the contamination, officials employed drones for an aerial inspection of the affected area.
The findings revealed that untreated sewage was spilling from the culvert and flowing directly into the stream, merging with the discolored water.
Authorities plan to conduct further assessments and implement follow-up actions to address the sewage issue in order to protect the local environment and public health. This proactive approach highlights the commitment of environmental officials to ensure water safety and mitigate pollution in the region.
