The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for 41 counties across South Carolina, affecting the Tri-County area which includes Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester, as well as Williamsburg, Georgetown, and Orangeburg County. This alert is expected to remain in effect until midnight.
According to Live 5 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Bill Walsh, the most significant storms are anticipated to develop in the evening, moving from the northern regions towards the Lowcountry. The areas most susceptible to the severe weather are those just inland from the coast. Residents should be prepared for gusty winds, heavy rain, lightning, and the possibility of hail.
In addition to the thunderstorm watch, a heat advisory has been in place for all Lowcountry counties since Wednesday morning, continuing until 8 p.m. Heat index values are expected to reach between 105 to 110 degrees. As of 10 a.m., temperatures across most of the Lowcountry were already feeling like 100 degrees, highlighted by Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine.
The Live 5 Weather team has declared Wednesday a First Alert Weather Day due to the high risks of heat-related illnesses for those not taking precautions. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two serious conditions that can arise from prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
