Effingham, IL – The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning affecting several counties in east central Illinois, including Coles, Edgar, Clark, northeastern Cumberland, and eastern Douglas Counties, set to remain in effect until 3:00 PM CST.

As of 2:11 PM CST, severe thunderstorms have been detected along a line from near Camargo to Rardin and approaching Charleston, moving eastward at a velocity of 55 mph. The storm is generating hazardous conditions, including wind gusts of 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. These severe weather conditions pose significant risks, including potential hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations anticipated to be impacted by these severe thunderstorms include Charleston, Oakland, Newman, Kansas, Ashmore, and Brocton around 2:15 PM CST, with Westfield expected at 2:20 PM CST, and Paris at approximately 2:30 PM CST. Other areas in the storm’s path include Marshall, Martinsville, Edgar County Airport, and Vermilion. The warning also affects portions of major highways, specifically Interstate 57 between mile markers 187 and 193, and Interstate 70 between mile markers 129 and 154.

Residents in the warned areas are advised to seek safety by moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of sturdy buildings, as these storms could escalate quickly. It is crucial to remain vigilant and stay updated on weather advisories throughout the afternoon.
