A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Milwaukee, Racine, Waukesha, and Kenosha counties, effective until 2:30 p.m. on June 3, as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS). The alert followed the detection of severe thunderstorms near Whitewater at 1:38 p.m., with the storms currently moving eastward at a brisk pace of 50 mph.
Meteorologists are cautioning residents to prepare for winds reaching up to 60 mph and hail that may measure up to 0.75 inches in diameter. According to NWS meteorologist Kevin Wagner, rain is projected to arrive in the Milwaukee area within the next thirty minutes, accompanied by heavy rainfall and gusty winds of 40 to 50 mph lasting approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Light rain may persist for an additional hour following this period.
The NWS has highlighted potential damage to structures, particularly roofs, siding, and trees, in specific areas such as Kenosha, West Allis, New Berlin, Greenfield, Muskego, and other surrounding towns. Of particular note, Kenosha is anticipated to experience the strongest winds, with initial reports indicating downed trees in Walworth County.
Additionally, Rock County is under a severe thunderstorm warning, prompting officials to advise attendees at the Music at the Marv festival in Janesville to seek shelter immediately.
Residents in the warned areas are encouraged to remain vigilant and find safe shelter. Tips for weathering thunderstorms include staying away from windows, avoiding electrical equipment and plumbing, keeping a battery-powered weather radio on hand, and securing loose outdoor items to prevent them from becoming hazardous projectiles in high winds.
Although thunderstorms can pose significant risks, timely warnings and preparedness can substantially mitigate potential damage and ensure safety.
