Louisville is bracing for severe storms, including the threat of tornadoes and large hail, on May 16, as a significant weather system approaches the area, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville. The NWS’s Storm Prediction Center has designated a moderate risk of severe storms for the western half of Kentucky and much of southern Indiana. Areas of Kentucky east of Frankfort fall under an enhanced risk, which is the third-highest severity level.

Meteorologist Brian Neudorff advised residents to prepare for adverse weather impacting outdoor plans between 3 PM and 6 PM. Additionally, there is a slight risk of flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, which are more prone to such events.

As of 7:47 PM, a severe thunderstorm warning is active for Louisville and surrounding areas, including central Jefferson County and parts of adjacent counties. This warning indicates risks of heavy rainfall, winds gusting up to 60 mph, and hail comparable to quarter size, with potential damage expected.

Earlier in the evening, the NWS issued a tornado watch for several counties in east and central Kentucky, now extended to cover the entire state until 3 AM on May 17.

In response to the impending threat, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency and activated the Kentucky Emergency Operations Center. The Kentucky National Guard is on standby for potential assistance. Gov. Beshear emphasized the need for residents to stay informed about weather alerts and to seek safety if necessary.

In anticipation of the severe weather, Jefferson County Public Schools canceled after-school activities on May 16, although high school proms will proceed as scheduled. Oldham County Public Schools also announced early releases for students, highlighting the importance of ensuring they are safe before the storms hit.

The forecast indicates a high of 86 degrees with a considerable chance of thunderstorms, followed by cooler temperatures in the coming days.

As the community braces for these storms, it’s crucial to prioritize safety and stay informed about weather updates and warnings. Local authorities and schools are taking proactive measures to protect residents and ensure everyone’s well-being amid this uncertain weather event.
