Thunderstorms began sweeping through Boston, southeastern Massachusetts, and Rhode Island in the early afternoon, leading to multiple severe storm warnings. Attendees at the Newport Folk Festival were advised to take shelter temporarily until the storms passed.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of Southern New England lasting until Friday evening. As the scattered thunderstorms move through the region, residents can expect heavy downpours, damaging winds, and hail. The Cape and Islands may see storms developing around 7 p.m. While evening plans might be interrupted by lingering showers, conditions are anticipated to clear by 9 p.m. with overnight temperatures cooling into the 60s.

Rainfall predictions indicate inconsistent totals, with some areas receiving only a tenth of an inch while others could see closer to half an inch or more. Local flooding may be a concern, so caution is advised when driving.

The stormy conditions coincided with a surge in temperatures in the region. Boston experienced a brief heatwave, soaring to 95 degrees on Friday, which ties it for the second hottest day of the year, as humidity surged the heat index into the 100s. The previous record of 96 degrees, established in 1882, is at risk of being matched or surpassed.

Looking ahead, the weekend promises more pleasant weather as a high-pressure system moves in behind Friday’s front. Saturday is expected to be beautiful, with highs reaching the low to mid-80s under sunny skies, making it an ideal day for outdoor activities. However, Sunday may bring a few scattered showers and thunderstorms primarily in the afternoon, particularly for areas south of Boston, while northern New England may remain drier.

The forecast shows a significant drop in temperatures as the weekend progresses, offering a much-needed relief from the recent heatwave. Highs are expected to settle in the 70s and low 80s, encouraging residents to enjoy the outdoors despite the potential for unsettled weather on Sunday.

This weekend’s upcoming weather represents a shift towards more comfortable and enjoyable conditions, providing a welcome break after the intense heat and severe storms.
