A severe thunderstorm swept through southeast Queensland during the 150th Anniversary of Esk State School, injuring nine attendees with hailstones measuring up to 9 cm. The alarming storm struck about an hour northwest of Brisbane, forcing paramedics to quickly assess individuals for hail-related injuries. Among the casualties, one woman required hospitalization due to neck and head injuries, while several others received treatment for minor wounds.
The storm not only brought in large hailstones but also unleashed heavy rainfall and damaging winds, resulting in shattered car windows and significant damage to homes. As of Sunday morning, approximately 4,500 properties in southeast Queensland were still without power, particularly in areas such as Somerset, Brisbane, and Ipswich. Local officials have estimated extensive damage due to the severe weather.
Queensland’s Emergency Services Minister, Mr. Crisafulli, reflected on the storms’ intensity, noting an incident at a wedding in Biloela where one guest was hospitalized due to the rapidly deteriorating weather. He also voiced concern for farmers in Bundaberg, who faced crop and irrigation damage earlier in the week due to similar storms. However, he emphasized the remarkable resilience of Queenslanders and their ability to confront natural adversities head-on.
The Bureau of Meteorology warned that severe weather and possible storms could continue into Sunday, although the impacted areas were expected to be more limited. Forecaster Angus Hines assured communities that while hazards remained, many regions should not experience the same level of danger.
In New South Wales, severe thunderstorms also struck parts of the Hunter region, mid-north coast, and central tablelands, with hailstones reportedly reaching 7 cm along with heavy rain in the Northern Rivers area. Local authorities urged residents to remain vigilant as they face these unpredictable weather patterns.
As the storms begin to subside, focus is shifting toward recovery and community support, highlighting the indomitable spirit of resilience that characterizes the region in the wake of such challenging weather conditions.
