Seth Lugo made a triumphant return to international baseball on Friday night, pitching for Team Puerto Rico during the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Taking the mound at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Lugo showcased his talent and determination after a challenging injury-riddled season.

The Kansas City Royals All-Star pitcher delivered an impressive performance, throwing four scoreless innings against Team Colombia. Lugo allowed three hits and issued two walks while striking out three batters before being substituted due to WBC’s pitch limit of 65. He effectively utilized 36 of his 62 pitches for strikes, reflecting his strong command on the mound.

Lugo started the game with vigor, recording two strikeouts in the first inning and employing his diverse pitching arsenal, particularly his slurve and four-seam fastball. These pitches proved effective, with Lugo achieving six swings and five called strikes on his slurve and averaging 92.7 mph on his fastball, a notable improvement from earlier this spring. At one point, Lugo even reached 95 mph while navigating through Colombia’s batting order.

Recognizing the importance of adding velocity to his game, Lugo had entered this offseason with clear goals. He focused on pitching with greater efficiency and consistency, stating, “That’s what I’m kind of honing down on this spring. I’m trying to be a little bit more consistent and help the (Royals) get to the playoffs.” His efforts were evident as he finished his outing with a combined 28% whiff rate on his pitches.

Lugo proved his mettle in high-pressure situations, striking out a batter to leave two runners stranded in the second inning and inducing a critical 6-4-3 double play to end the fourth. Such moments evoked memories of his standout 2024 season, where he finished second in the American League Cy Young voting.

Following his strong outing, Lugo will have a four-day break before his next appearance in the tournament. This initial success at the WBC marks a promising start for Lugo’s quest, both for Puerto Rico and the Kansas City Royals, as he looks to reclaim his form and contribute significantly this season following a tough year plagued by injuries.
