Serious Health Risk: Lay’s Classic Potato Chips Recalled Over Allergens

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has elevated a previous recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips to its highest risk classification due to the potential presence of undeclared milk ingredients. This classification, known as “Class I,” indicates that there is a reasonable likelihood of serious health consequences or even fatal outcomes from consuming the affected product.

Frito-Lay, based in Plano, Texas, initially announced the recall last month, stating that a limited number of 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips might contain undeclared milk. The recall was prompted by notifications from consumers. The company emphasized that individuals with milk allergies or severe sensitivities face the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the affected chips.

The recalled bags were distributed to various retail locations and e-commerce platforms in Oregon and Washington, with sales beginning as early as November 3, 2024. The affected products carry a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of February 11, 2025, and feature a UPC code of 28400 31041. Consumers can identify the recalled bags by their yellow packaging, the red Lay’s logo, and a blue “Party Size” banner, alongside specific manufacturing codes: 6462307xx or 6463307xx.

Frito-Lay has confirmed that no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall thus far. Consumers who may have purchased these products are advised not to eat them and to dispose of the items immediately. The company has made it clear that only these specific Lay’s products are affected, with no other flavors or sizes included in the recall.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the vigilance required in ensuring that packaging accurately reflects contents, particularly for individuals with food allergies. Companies must stay proactive in monitoring potential hazards to protect consumer health effectively.
