This week, temperatures are anticipated to rise between 35 degrees Celsius, 2 to 4 degrees higher than the previous week. In light of this situation, the administration has formed a dedicated team to implement proactive heatwave responses targeted at the public and relevant institutions.
Climate analysis indicates a 50% chance that temperatures in July and August will exceed average levels, with heat advisories already in effect since the start of July. To counter the heatwave threat, the administration plans to launch a campaign aimed at preventing heat-related injuries, provide agricultural workers with real-time information on hot hours, and encourage family members to check in on elderly relatives regarding heat safety.
Additionally, support for disaster management agencies will include real-time updates on heatwave forecast variability, operational social media communication, and easily understandable data regarding peak temperatures, particularly for children and the elderly who are most vulnerable.
To effectively monitor and respond to summer heatwaves, mobile weather observation equipment will be installed at Yeouido Hangang Park for real-time temperature comparisons until the end of August, contributing to heat analysis efforts. Acting Chief Yoon Gi-han emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration with related agencies to minimize potential heatwave impacts. He urged the public to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day (11 AM to 5 PM) and to take special care to protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and laborers.
These measures aim to significantly reduce heatwave-related damages in the metropolitan area, and the Meteorological Administration’s proactive approach and public information efforts are expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and safety during this extreme weather.
