Fiji’s distinguished powerlifter, Salacieli Koroi, is brimming with enthusiasm as he prepares for the Oceania Regional Championship, set to take place in Christchurch, New Zealand, from November 17 to 21. Koroi gained widespread recognition at just 21 years old when he clinched a silver medal in the Men’s Raw Open 105kg category during the 2023 South Pacific Games, solidifying his status as a foremost competitor in his sport. He has since established national records in the 105kg class, including a remarkable deadlift of 320kg and an impressive total lift of 730kg.
Last year, Koroi took on a pivotal role as coach and manager for the national team during the regional championship. However, this year marks a shift as he prepares to compete, aiming to secure medals in various lifts. “Winning in all lifts is the goal. I’ll just give it my best and let my hard work get displayed on the platform,” he stated confidently.
The international arena presents its own set of challenges, especially when competing against world-class athletes. Koroi underscored the importance of confidence in such high-stakes settings, remarking, “These international competitions require a lot of confidence, especially when you compete with other world champions from around the globe.” This year’s competition promises to be fiercely contested, with many internationally ranked athletes also pursuing regional titles.
Aside from the competitive pressures, Koroi faces a significant challenge regarding funding. The trip to New Zealand will be self-funded, meaning that both the athletes and the sporting body must cover their own expenses, adding an extra layer of stress during an already demanding competition period.
