Sehwag Slams Pandya: Did MI Miss a Captaincy Call?

Sehwag Slams Pandya: Did MI Miss a Captaincy Call?

Former Indian cricket star Virender Sehwag did not hold back in his criticism of Hardik Pandya’s captaincy after the Mumbai Indians suffered a defeat to the Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. The loss saw PBKS secure their place in the top two ahead of the playoffs. Sehwag expressed disappointment over Hardik’s decision to continue using pacer Deepak Chahar, who was visibly struggling with an injury. Despite having his hamstring strapped during the match, Chahar’s performance deteriorated, conceding significant runs in his second over, which Sehwag believes turned the tide in favor of PBKS.

During commentary, Sehwag stated, “Even after Deepak Chahar’s hamstring was strapped, Hardik made him bowl two overs. Chahar’s first over was a maiden but he conceded 28 runs in the next two overs. That shifted the match in Punjab Kings’ favor.” He urged that had Hardik opted for a different bowler instead, MI might have saved crucial runs and applied pressure on PBKS.

On the other hand, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer praised the collective effort of his team, highlighting their winning mindset and the strong relationships fostered within the squad. Iyer noted, “Everyone stepped up at the right time. We have been in that mindset that we have to win no matter what the situation.” He specifically mentioned the impactful performances of Priyansh Arya and Josh Inglis that contributed to their commanding seven-wicket victory over MI.

Iyer acknowledged the role of team management in building trust and rapport among players, which he believes is vital, especially in tough situations. He also praised Arya’s impressive start and expressed hope for continued strong performances from Inglis.

With this victory, PBKS has climbed to the top of the IPL points table, preparing for Qualifier 1, while MI faces the challenge of battling in Eliminator 1. This marks only the second occasion PBKS has finished in the top two for a Qualifier, a feat previously achieved in 2014.

Overall, the match showcased both the strategic elements of the game and the importance of teamwork, with PBKS demonstrating resilience and a strong cohesive spirit.
