A second suspect in the recent attack on senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay has been charged by the Colombian Prosecutor’s Office, as reported in a recent statement. The identified accused, Carlos Eduardo Mora González, is thought to be a co-author of the assassination attempt, allegedly playing a key role in the logistics of the attack. He faces charges that include attempted aggravated homicide, illegal possession of firearms, and involving minors in criminal activities. Following the charges, the prosecutor requested that Mora Gonzalez be detained.
Mora González turned himself in to authorities, as confirmed by Uribe Turbay’s attorney, Víctor Mosquera Marín. The prosecutor’s investigations reveal that Mora González was reportedly involved in reconnaissance of the attack site just a week prior and participated in the logistics of the assault, with his presence noted in the vehicle used to transfer the weapon to a minor on the day of the attack.
The first suspect, a minor arrested on the same day of the attack, has been accused of firing at the senator, although he denies these allegations. Alongside the indictment of Mora González, the Prosecutor’s Office is interrogating two additional individuals who voluntarily reported to the authorities.
Mosquera Marín expressed optimism that the ongoing investigation will soon lead to those responsible for orchestrating the attack. The team representing Uribe Turbay has reportedly contributed testimonies, emails, and videos to help the authorities in their inquiry. As of now, the senator remains hospitalized at the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, where his condition is stable but critical.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges that public officials face in Colombia amidst a backdrop of political tensions and violence. It remains to be seen how the investigation will unfold, and many are hopeful that efforts will bring about justice and safety for all involved.
