SEC Showdowns and New Faces: Can Missouri Shine?

Every Thursday, I will present a preview of the upcoming week in college football with my “Three by Three,” highlighting three intriguing aspects from the Mizzou game, the SEC, and national matchups. My aim is to focus on both big and underrated teams, not just Georgia and Ohio State every time.

Missouri vs Murray State — 7 PM Thursday on SECN

Dominant Defensive Line

When a top-tier team faces an FCS opponent, individual matchups might not set the tone for future conference games, but it’s crucial to observe the overall performance of certain units. Missouri’s restructured defensive line needs to dominate the game on Thursday. With end Darius Robinson gone to the NFL and most of the tackle rotation missing, this group is undergoing a major transition. I’m particularly curious about how Corey Batoon utilizes Johnny Walker Jr. and Joe Moore at boundary defensive end, especially as they take on more coverage responsibilities. Additionally, I want to see young talents like Marquis Gracial, Williams Nwaneri, and Jakhai Lang in action. For the Tigers to achieve success akin to last season, they must excel upfront on Thursday night.

Replacing Stars

This game marks a significant transition from last year’s team. While the stars of the past will remain memorable, they won’t appear in this season’s program. I’m eager to see the fresh faces get their chance to shine. Nate Noel is likely to become a fan favorite with his explosive running style, adding a new dimension to the offense. I’m also excited to see Marcus Bryant take on formidable pass rushers, as well as the impact of Triston Newson and Khalil Jacobs at linebacker. Of course, there’s Blake Craig, tasked with stepping into the role left by the legendary Thiccer Kicker. While we still have familiar players to cheer for, I’m looking forward to the new talents making a name for themselves.

Touchdown Luther Burden

As excited as we are about the new Tigers, there’s a palpable excitement to see Luther Burden back on the field. His presence is crucial for the program, and the coaching staff is likely to create opportunities for him to enhance his stats. While winning games is the priority, having Luther gain national recognition with impressive performances is also essential. His journey starts tonight, and I am eager to see the magic he brings as he aims to fill the box score.

In the SEC

Clemson vs Georgia – 11 AM Saturday on ABC

This week’s college football slate has limited intriguing Power Five matchups, and four of them involve SEC teams. Despite recent shifts in the Big Ten’s broadcasting, the SEC continues to host the premier games. This matchup features two of the three active coaches with national championships. Georgia boasts an abundance of talent, while Clemson’s lineup is equally impressive. Defensive tackle Peter Woods stands out as a key player aiming to contain Carson Beck’s performance.

Miami at Florida – 2:30 PM Saturday on ABC

Florida head coach Billy Napier faces mounting pressure during a challenging season, compounded by a tough SEC schedule and several in-state rivals. It’s crucial for the Gators to secure a strong start against Miami to stave off growing frustrations. Miami, having aggressively pursued talent via NIL and the transfer portal, will debut Cam Ward at quarterback. One team will certainly be disappointed by the end of the game on Saturday.

Notre Dame at Texas A&M – 6:30 PM Saturday on ABC

The Notre Dame offensive line is facing injuries, forcing the team to start players they would prefer to develop more. This situation poses a challenge in their opener against a strong Texas A&M defensive line. The Aggies aim to prove their worth under coach Mike Elko after a tumultuous period with Jimbo Fisher. Expect a physical game, with both teams showcasing top-notch defenses while their offenses continue to find their rhythm.

Around the Nation

North Dakota State at Colorado – 7 PM Thursday on ESPN

This matchup presents a contrast between Colorado’s high-octane offense and the physical playstyle of North Dakota State. Colorado’s pace slowed significantly after midway through last season, making this matchup interesting as the Buffaloes may look to control the tempo. While North Dakota State may not be at its peak, they remain a formidable FCS contender. The question remains whether they can effectively challenge Colorado’s elite roster.

Boise State at Georgia Southern – 3 PM Saturday on ESPNU

It wouldn’t be complete without mentioning a prominent Sun Belt matchup on the slate. These two respected mid-major teams square off in hopes of a high-scoring game under the Georgia sun. Boise State is considered a frontrunner for the Group of Five playoff slot, although they surprised everyone by naming Maddux Madson as starting quarterback over five-star recruit Malachi Nelson. Regardless, they should find scoring opportunities against a leaky Georgia Southern defense. This game features talented running backs Ashton Jeanty of Boise and Jalen White of Georgia Southern, both of whom are underappreciated in the national conversation.

Boston College at Florida State – 6:30 PM Monday on ESPN

This game intrigues me from both perspectives. I am eager to see if Florida State can recover from a disappointing loss in Week Zero. The Noles have a robust roster, but there are areas of concern, particularly with their linebacker depth. Their offensive line has experience, and while their backfield shows talent, their running game struggled. DJ Uiagalelei’s performance was a mix of clutch moments and critical errors. To contend effectively, Florida State will need strategic coaching and precise execution to address their weaknesses. This challenge begins Monday night against future Mizzou opponent Boston College, who has the right tools to expose FSU’s vulnerabilities.
