SEC Showdown: Will New Stars Shine Tonight?

Each Thursday, I will share insights in my “Three by Three” segment, where I explore three intriguing aspects of the Mizzou matchup, delve into the SEC, and examine notable happenings across the nation in college football. My intention is to highlight some under-the-radar topics, rather than focusing solely on major teams like Georgia and Ohio State.

Missouri vs. Murray State – 7 PM Thursday on SECN

Dominant Defensive Line

In matchups between top-tier teams and FCS opponents, the individual matchups may not be as critical, but the overall performance of specific units becomes essential. This Thursday, I’m eager to see Missouri’s revamped defensive line assert its dominance. With the departure of end Darius Robinson to the NFL and a majority of the tackle rotation gone, this unit is undergoing a significant transformation. I’m particularly interested in how defensive coordinator Corey Batoon utilizes Johnny Walker Jr. and Joe Moore at the boundary defensive end with added coverage responsibilities. Additionally, I’m keen to observe the contributions of emerging players like Marquis Gracial, Williams Nwaneri, and Jakhai Lang. If Missouri aims to duplicate last season’s achievements, it must first establish control at the line of scrimmage.

Replacing Stars

This game marks a pivotal shift from last season’s squad. While last year’s standout players will always be remembered, they are no longer part of the team. I’m excited to see new talent take the stage. Running back Nate Noel has the potential to become a fan favorite with his explosive speed, while I’m looking forward to seeing Marcus Bryant handle elite pass rushers. Triston Newson and Khalil Jacobs are set to make their mark at linebacker, and Blake Craig has the tough task of filling the shoes of the legendary Thiccer Kicker. While familiar faces remain, the emergence of new stars is something to be excited about.

Touchdown Luther Burden

As we anticipate the debut of new players, the return of star receiver Luther Burden generates significant excitement. With limited opportunities left to see one of the most important recruits in Mizzou history, Burden’s performance is critical. His presence elevates the program, and I believe the coaching staff will create chances for him to enhance his statistics. While winning is the overarching goal, showcasing Burden’s talent nationally in December is also important. His journey begins tonight, and I eagerly await the highlights he will produce.

In the SEC

Clemson vs. Georgia – 11 AM Saturday on ABC

This week features a few compelling Power Five matchups, with several involving SEC teams. Despite recent changes in conference alignments, the SEC maintains its dominance, presenting the best games across all time slots. This matchup pits two of the three current head coaches with national championships against each other. While Georgia boasts a wealth of talent, Clemson also fields a formidable starting lineup, including standout defensive tackle Peter Woods, who will challenge quarterback Carson Beck and his offense.

Miami at Florida – 2:30 PM Saturday on ABC

Florida head coach Billy Napier faces increasing pressure amid a tough SEC schedule coupled with three in-state rivalries. His Gators must secure a strong start against Miami to stave off further scrutiny. Miami, aggressively using NIL and the transfer portal, will debut quarterback Cam Ward. One of these teams will leave the field deeply disappointed come Saturday evening.

Notre Dame at Texas A&M – 6:30 PM Saturday on ABC

Notre Dame’s offensive line is facing significant challenges, with several players sidelined and unexpected starters taking their place. This situation is daunting as they begin the season against a fierce and talented Texas A&M defensive front. The Aggies aim to shed the label of being all talk with strong performances guided by head coach Mike Elko, hoping to demonstrate their defensive prowess while both teams look to solidify their offenses.

Around the Nation

North Dakota State at Colorado – 7 PM Thursday on ESPN

This contest features a dynamic Colorado squad facing off against a tough North Dakota State team. Notably, Colorado’s pace has slowed significantly following a mid-season change in offensive coordination last year, presenting a new tactical challenge. While the Bison may not be at their peak, they remain a formidable opponent capable of testing Colorado’s depth and talent.

Boise State at Georgia Southern – 3 PM Saturday on ESPNU

Another interesting matchup features mid-major powerhouses Boise State and Georgia Southern. This anticipated game promises high-scoring action, as Boise aims for a Group of Five playoff spot while experimenting with underdog quarterback Maddux Madson. Expect an engaging ground game featuring two underrated running backs, Boise’s Ashton Jeanty and Georgia Southern’s Jalen White.

Boston College at Florida State – 6:30 PM Monday on ESPN

Both teams have compelling narratives heading into this game. Florida State seeks to recover from a disappointing loss, boasting a strong yet imperfect roster. The defensive line and backfield are solid, but the linebacking corps showed weaknesses in their last game. Boston College presents a unique challenge with a mobile quarterback, Thomas Castellanos, and a steady defensive front, potentially exposing gaps in Florida State’s game.
