On July 29, 2009, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) recorded an all-time high temperature of 103 degrees, surpassing its previous record of 100 degrees set in 1994. However, this record was eclipsed in June 2021 during a heat dome event, reaching 108 degrees. July 29 is also historically one of Seattle’s driest days, with measurable rain occurring only six times at the old Federal Building weather station since the 1890s. This year, Sea-Tac has seen a significant rain deficit of over 6.5 inches, while the typically rainy region of Forks is 20 inches behind.

As Seafair week unfolds, the Seattle area prepares for exciting events including an air show featuring the Blue Angels, with practice runs scheduled for Thursday and Friday. High temperatures in the 80s are anticipated for these festivities, but the forecast predicts thunderstorms across the Cascades, bringing the potential for lingering rain on Thursday. A shift in the weather pattern may usher in cooler temperatures, with highs expected only in the 70s later in the week.

The ongoing dry conditions raise concerns about wildfires, as the combination of thunderstorms and dry vegetation heightens the risk of lightning-induced blazes. Although the area has fortunately avoided wildfire smoke this summer, residents remain cautious, as six out of the last eight summers have been impacted by smoke from nearby fires. Nonetheless, the influx of marine air from the Pacific is expected to maintain good air quality during Seafair weekend.

In addition to the excitement from Seafair, the Seattle Mariners will be returning home to face the Texas Rangers in a four-game series starting Thursday. The comfortable weather conditions should facilitate enjoyable outdoor experiences for residents and visitors alike. However, safety remains a priority; with the dry landscape, care should be taken with any burning materials.

Tips for enjoying Seafair safely include staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and being vigilant about fire risk. Embracing the summer festivities while being responsible towards the environment creates the perfect balance for a spirited and secured celebration.
