Seattle police made 23 arrests during confrontations between protestors and officers in Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill on Saturday. The unrest ensued when two opposing groups were present at the location, leading to chaos around 1:30 PM, according to the Seattle Police Department’s update on their Blotter.
The police reported that members of one group began throwing items, including water bottles, at their counterparts. In response to the escalating situation, officers engaged to separate the groups and arrested individuals initiating violence, resulting in 11 initial arrests. As the confrontation continued throughout the afternoon, an additional 12 people were apprehended for assault and obstruction, and one juvenile was also arrested but subsequently released.
Throughout the protest, some officers sustained injuries; one was treated and released from the hospital. To alleviate pressure on the frontline officers, Washington State Patrol troopers were called to assist.
The Capitol Hill Seattle Blog highlighted that the protest was a counter-demonstration to an event organized by a Spokane-based church, On Fire Ministries, led by pastor and former state representative Matt Shea. This gathering aimed to speak out against sex trafficking and abortion and promote traditional family values.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell addressed the situation, emphasizing the city’s commitment to inclusivity, especially for LGBTQ+ communities. He noted that the rally was intended to incite a response by presenting beliefs that contradict Seattle’s core values. The mayor’s statement underscored the collective support for the city’s diverse communities as they face challenges.
