Search Underway Near Vio Island, Lautoka After Boat Capsizes

The families of Imraz Zain Iqbal and seven-year-old Arshad Irfan Khan Junior are holding onto hope that their loved ones will be found safely as they remain missing after a fishing trip near Vio Island, Lautoka. The trip, which took place on Sunday afternoon, has resulted in a heartbreaking scenario after police confirmed the recovery of the body of Arshad’s grandfather, Basant Singh, on Monday, as well as the body of a teenager, Junaid Shah, discovered the following day.

Survivor Abdul Ashif Hakh recounted the terrifying moment when their boat capsized due to sudden bad weather on Sunday evening. Despite the odds, Hakh managed to throw a life jacket to young Arshad before they were separated in the turbulent waters. Once he reached safety, Hakh reported the incident to Lautoka Police, which triggered an extensive search operation for the three missing individuals.

The search efforts have been focused around Covuli Reef, with authorities utilizing local water patrol teams and the support of community members to comb the waters for any signs of Arshad and Imraz. The situation surrounding the capsizing of the vessel has sparked discussions about maritime safety in the region, particularly with the cyclone season approaching, prompting local officials to urge families to remain vigilant during water activities.

Arshad’s father expressed his heartache noting that his son, who seldom ventured out on fishing trips due to his fear of water, insisted on joining the outing that day. “He was my only child, and he was a smart boy,” said Mr. Khan, reflecting on Arshad’s close bond with his grandfather.

Junaid’s mother recounted her last conversation with her son, who had taken a gap year to focus on his mechanical repairs business after completing Year 12. She emphasized her unwavering hope for his safe return, stating, “My heart is still not at peace.”

The local community has come together in support of the families during this trying time, demonstrating resilience and a collective determination to bring the missing individuals home safely. As search efforts continue, there remains a flicker of hope that the families will receive good news and be reunited with their loved ones.
