Authorities are continuing the search for 43-year-old Dustin Valencia, who went missing while kayaking on Lake Lanier in Georgia on May 14. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has reported that Valencia’s yellow and gray inflatable kayak, along with a paddle, were located by a citizen soon after he disappeared, but no further traces of him have been found.
Valencia, a father of five, was last seen by his children on the day he went missing. His wife, Jennifer, who reported him missing, shared with deputies that Dustin had come home earlier that day before leaving in their 2006 Honda Accord. When he did not pick up their children from school as expected, Jennifer attempted to reach him via phone, but had no success. Using a tracking app, she identified his last known location, but he was absent when she checked the area, prompting her to contact law enforcement.
Investigators have noted that at the time of his disappearance, Valencia did not have a life vest and was only believed to possess one plastic oar. The absence of essential safety equipment and uninflated kayak seats raises concerns about his kayaking conditions.
Lake Lanier, where the incident occurred, is regarded as a dangerous area, with over 200 fatalities reported since 1994. In touch with a long history of tragedies, the lake recorded several incidents in both 2023 and 2024, including multiple drownings and boating accidents.
