Boston Blue is taking strides to expand the Blue Bloods franchise as it rolls out its 2025 TV schedule, nearly a year after the original series concluded. Donnie Wahlberg is back in action as Detective Danny Reagan while Bridget Moynahan and Marisa Ramirez have also reprised their roles from the original show. However, one significant change has caught the attention of fans: Sean Reagan, Danny’s youngest son, has been recast, now portrayed by Mika Amonsen instead of Andrew Terraciano, who played the character for all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods.
Showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier explained that the recasting decision was made to reflect the passage of time in the storyline as they transitioned to Boston Blue. Despite Amonsen’s dedication to embodying Sean’s character and his efforts to connect with fans, he has faced backlash following the announcement of the change. Speaking with Us Weekly, Amonsen acknowledged the negativity but also highlighted the support he has received from some fans who appreciate his take on the character: “There’s been some negativity, for sure. But when I look under those posts that have the negativity, there’s a lot of fans rallying for Sean.”
Given Terraciano’s long-standing portrayal, the strong reactions from fans are understandable. Nevertheless, Amonsen is finding solace in the fact that some viewers enjoy his interpretation of Sean after catching glimpses of the character’s growth in the new series. This dynamic character evolution is intriguing for audiences, especially as Sean navigates his journey as a rookie cop while managing new personal challenges, such as a budding romance with a character played by Xochitl Gomez.
The future of other Blue Bloods characters in Boston Blue remains uncertain, particularly Sean’s older brother, Jack, played by Tony Terraciano, Andrew’s real-life sibling. Speculations about Jack’s potential appearance in the new series continue, and fans are eager to see if other familiar characters, include Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan, will also make an appearance.
Streaming of all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods is available through Paramount+, offering fans a chance to revisit Terraciano’s portrayal of Sean. New episodes of Boston Blue can be viewed on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS, providing an opportunity for audiences to witness Mika Amonsen’s portrayal unfold. As the show evolves, it strives to strike a balance between honoring the past and carving out a new narrative for the future.
