Seahawks Shake Up Offense: What’s Next After Coordinator Change?

The Seattle Seahawks are undergoing another restructure as they head into the 2025 season, albeit on a smaller scale compared to the previous year’s overhaul. On Monday, head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed the decision to part ways with offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb after just one season.

“I felt like the direction our offense was going was different than the vision I had for the football team,” stated Macdonald during an interview with KIRO-AM radio.

Grubb, who is 48 years old, was brought on board last offseason by Macdonald, who was also in his first year as head coach. The expectation was for Grubb to spearhead an aggressive downfield passing offense. However, the Seahawks concluded the season with a ranking of 14th in total offense, averaging 332.2 yards per game, and 18th in scoring, with an average of 22.1 points per game. Quarterback Geno Smith experienced significant pressure throughout the season, and the run game struggled, ranking 28th in the league.

Despite the team’s challenges, Smith expressed support for Grubb following a victory over the Los Angeles Rams that capped off a 10-7 season for Macdonald. “I think Grubb is an excellent coordinator and an even better man,” Smith remarked. “Our first year, obviously there were some ups and downs. There were some things that we can improve on, and we’ll work hard to get those things fixed. But I believe in this system. I believe this is a really good system and it’s going to be really good for a long time.”

When asked about Smith’s future as the team’s quarterback, Macdonald replied, “Got no reason to say no, so I guess yeah,” indicating that Smith is likely to return next season.

This transition presents an opportunity for the Seahawks to realign their offensive strategy going forward. The hope is that by making this change, the team will be better equipped to maximize their potential and enhance overall performance in the upcoming season.

As the Seahawks move forward, fans can remain optimistic about the team’s commitment to improvement and the potential for a brighter offensive future.
