The Seattle Seahawks are reportedly receiving trade inquiries regarding cornerback Riq Woolen and linebacker Boye Mafe as the NFL trade deadline approaches, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
This development follows NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport’s earlier report that teams around the league have been closely monitoring Woolen’s status. Selected to the Pro Bowl in his rookie year in 2022, Woolen’s diminishing role in the defense has led to speculation about his availability ahead of the trade deadline, particularly as he is in a contract year.
Currently, Woolen has logged 19 tackles and three passes defended over six games this season, but his impact has been questioned due to a decrease in playing time. The emergence of fellow cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who has recorded 17 tackles and a quarterback hit in only two games, has further complicated Woolen’s situation. Once seen as a cornerstone of Seattle’s defense, Woolen’s performance has waned compared to his rookie year when he led the league with six interceptions. He has struggled with giving up significant plays, including two crucial ones in a Week 1 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, and has already committed six penalties this season.
On the other hand, Mafe has contributed nine tackles and two quarterback hits across seven games since being drafted out of Minnesota in 2022. His consistent presence in Seattle’s defense makes him another player of interest for teams looking to bolster their rosters.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Seahawks find themselves at a pivotal moment, weighing the potential of these young players against the benefits of pursuing trade offers that could strengthen their squad for the future.
