Rising sea levels and changing weather patterns are increasingly influencing life in Nakasaleka, a district on Kadavu Island. Residents are becoming acutely aware that every development decision made could significantly affect their future.

Although the changes may seem subtle, they are causing concern among the local community. Rovuama Walai, the district representative for Nakasaleka, is calling for careful consideration as new development projects begin to emerge on the island. During a recent village meeting, Walai expressed the importance of being vigilant about climate change, which he notes is gradually manifesting in the area.

He warned, “We need to be very careful with the type of development we allow on our shores, as we do not fully understand the potential changes and disadvantages some developments may bring. While something might appear as progress on the surface, there can be hidden risks.”

As part of efforts to counter these shifting environmental realities, initiatives like the Kavala Greenhouse project are encouraging local farmers, fishermen, and families to collectively strategize on how to adapt. Discussions are taking place around modifying planting schedules and safeguarding vulnerable coastal areas to better prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Walai reinforced that the future of their environment and lifestyle hinges on the choices they make regarding development. “The arrival of climate change at our shores means that our decisions today will shape our tomorrow. How we plan for development is critical to countering the challenges posed by climate change,” he said.

As the community navigates these pressing issues, there remains hope that through careful planning and decisiveness, they can mitigate potential threats and embrace a more sustainable future.
