SDSU Women Cruise Past Creighton in Season Opener Behind Meyer’s 33

In an impressive season opener, South Dakota State University’s women’s basketball team triumphed over Creighton, securing a decisive 78-62 victory. This marks a significant achievement for SDSU, as it represents their second-ever road win against Creighton, despite the Bluejays leading their all-time series 11-7.

Senior star Brooklyn Meyer delivered a standout performance, scoring 33 points—just one short of her career high—on 14-of-20 shooting and contributing eight rebounds, five blocks, and five assists. Meyer’s performance was particularly noteworthy as she scored 13 of SDSU’s 20 points in the second quarter and was a critical factor in their late-game surge, helping the Jackrabbits outscore the Bluejays 26-15 in the final quarter. Following this game, Meyer’s career scoring total reached 1,663 points, placing her 23rd on the all-time scoring list at South Dakota State.

The team’s overall shooting was impressive, with the Jackrabbits finishing at 53% from the field and hitting 6-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc. Their strong second-half performance was contrasted with Creighton, whose struggles were evident with only a 33% overall shooting rate.

Creighton’s freshman Ava Zediker led her team with 17 points in her collegiate debut, while teammate Kennedy Townsend added 14 points. Despite the loss, the Bluejays maintained an edge in assists, 15 to 13, and steals, 6 to 5, showcasing some bright spots for future games.

The Jackrabbits will return to Brookings to host Rice in their upcoming match on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the First Bank & Trust Arena, aiming to build on their strong start to the season. With Meyer leading the charge and the team showcasing a solid performance, the Jackrabbits appear poised for a promising season ahead.
