Screen Addiction Crisis: Are Our Kids Paying the Price?

Screen Addiction Crisis: Are Our Kids Paying the Price?

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, alarming trends concerning children’s mental health and well-being tied to screen use have emerged in Delhi. Increasingly, the phenomenon of screen addiction among youth is leading to serious psychological and physical issues, as highlighted by numerous stark cases shared by child psychologists and school administrators.

Several examples illustrate the crisis. One case involves a 12-year-old boy who, previously active in sports, began to withdraw socially, skip meals, and became engrossed in screens overnight. His diagnosis revealed “emerging depressive features” linked to excessive screen time. Effective treatment included parental training and cognitive behavioral therapy, which notably improved his mood and academic participation.

Similarly concerning is the story of a nine-year-old boy who, after his phone was taken away, resorted to self-harm. This incident showcased his severe emotional distress, classified as a behavioral addiction with withdrawal-like symptoms. Emergency interventions and therapy helped him to regain control over his emotions and behavior.

Further illustrating the impact of screen addiction, a 19-year-old’s extensive gaming resulted in a significant spinal deformity, necessitating complex corrective surgery after he experienced severe health complications. Not only does this case emphasize the physical dangers of excessive screen time, but it also points to a growing trend among adolescents suffering from severe mental health issues, including suicidal ideation as noted in international studies correlating screen addiction with negative mental health outcomes.

School administrators, such as Anjali Kharbanda and Dr. Ameeta Mulla Wattal, stress the importance of recognizing the early warning signs of screen addiction, which often manifest as declining grades and social withdrawal. This has prompted a call for structured management of screen time within educational environments.

Recent directives from the Delhi High Court seek a balance between responsible screen use and access, encouraging schools to implement policies that regulate mobile phone usage while educating students on the potential risks associated with high screen exposure. The emphasis on teaching digital etiquette and responsible online behavior aims to mitigate risks such as cyberbullying and stress, fostering an environment where children can thrive.

Notably, initiatives led by students, such as the anti-bullying campaign PLANY launched by twins Samaya and Samhara Chauhan, reflect a growing awareness of these challenges among youth themselves. Their proactive stance emphasizes education for girls and online safety, aiming to provide a holistic response to the issues stemming from screen addiction.

Ultimately, with the recognition of the detrimental effects of excessive screen time, there is hope for a more balanced approach to technology among children, promoting healthier lifestyles and improved mental well-being through proper guidance and community support.
