Six short films from the Sean Connery Talent Lab will make their world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) this August. The films are the result of a year-long collaboration between the EIFF and the National Film and Television School (NFTS), aimed at cultivating new talent in the filmmaking community.
The Sean Connery Talent Lab was established to honor the legacy of the late Sir Sean Connery, an original James Bond and an Edinburgh native who passed away in October 2020. His sons, Jason and Stephane Connery, initiated the foundation that bears his name to create avenues for talented young filmmakers in Scotland to pursue meaningful careers within the industry.
The films scheduled for premiere between August 14 and 20 include “Gowk” directed by Ryan Pollock, “Nora Can’t Score” helmed by Josefa Celestin, Catriona Macleod’s “Lady Maclean,” and Alex Salam’s “Twenty Twenty.” Additional entries are “Static” by Miranda Stern and “Checkout” directed by Mairead Hamilton.
Chris Young, who leads the Sean Connery Talent Lab, commended the initiative for its capacity to broaden the filmmaking landscape in Scotland. EIFF chief executive Paul Ridd expressed admiration for the impressive films produced during the inaugural year, noting the program’s potential to change the film industry meaningfully and foster a bright future for Scottish cinema.
Jon Wardle, the director of NFTS, reflected on the remarkable achievements of the first cohort, emphasizing that their work exemplifies the impact of support and mentorship on emerging talent. The selection of these films for the festival underscores the success of the Talent Lab approach.
Jason and Stephane Connery reiterated their father’s commitment to nurturing young talent, stating that the premiere in Edinburgh is a powerful continuation of his legacy. The encouragement and backing received from partnerships have been pivotal in launching this new generation of storytellers.
This initiative marks a promising new chapter in Scotland’s cinematic story, demonstrating the potential for the next generation of filmmakers to thrive and shine in the industry.
