Scott Speedman, known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy, is set to pivot from medicine to crime investigation in the upcoming ABC series RJ Decker. In an exclusive preview by Us Weekly, Speedman’s character, RJ, labels himself “the sunshine state’s most lovable PI.” However, that title might be put to the test as RJ is seen getting punched by an exotic dancer, leading him to quip, “Business is booming. Turns out, murder never takes a vacation.”
Based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel *Double Whammy*, RJ Decker follows a disgraced former newspaper photographer and ex-con trying to reinvent himself as a private investigator amidst the vibrant and crime-ridden backdrop of South Florida. He tackles a variety of cases with the support of his journalist ex-girlfriend, her police detective wife, and a mysterious benefactor from his past who may either help or hinder his fresh start.
In addition to Speedman, the show features Jaina Lee Ortiz from Station 19 as Emi Ochoa, described as a “shrewd-if-unpredictable daughter of a powerful, corrupt state senator” connected to RJ’s history. Following a recasting, her character was previously named Shay Bennett and portrayed by Weruche Opia. Other cast members include Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens, and Bevin Bru.
Speedman, who rejoined Grey’s Anatomy as a recurring character after taking a break, assures fans that his role as Nick Marsh will not interfere with his commitments to RJ Decker. He first captured the hearts of Grey’s Anatomy viewers in season 14, later becoming a main cast member in seasons 18 and 19, highlighting his strong presence in the series.
Speedman shared his experiences with the show’s enthusiastic fan base, noting their reactions on social media. After his debut episodes aired, many expressed their discontent with vomit emojis, a response that Speedman found amusing, considering the intensity of the fans’ investment in character dynamics.
RJ Decker is set to premiere on March 3 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes available for streaming the following day on Hulu. This new venture promises to showcase Speedman’s versatility as an actor and his ability to tackle darker, more comedic material in contrast to his role on Grey’s Anatomy, potentially attracting a new audience while retaining his established fan base.
