Scott Frost’s Bold Return: A Cautionary Tale for Aspiring Coaches

UCF football head coach Scott Frost has reflected on his challenging tenure at Nebraska, suggesting that it wasn’t the right fit for him. During Big 12 media days, Frost advised caution to aspiring coaches, saying, “Don’t take the wrong job.” He further elaborated, recalling the pull he felt to return to his alma mater and his realization that it may not have been the best decision for his career.

Frost left UCF, where he found tremendous success, to join Nebraska in December 2017 on a lucrative seven-year, $35 million contract. His record in Lincoln, however, was disappointing, with a 16-31 overall record and a lack of significant achievements in the Big Ten. After a rocky start to the 2022 season, he was dismissed just three games in following a notable upset loss to Georgia Southern.

Now back at UCF on a five-year deal following Gus Malzahn’s resignation, Frost’s return comes after an impressive coaching stint at UCF, where he led the team from a winless 2015 season to a perfect 13-0 record in 2017, highlighted by a Peach Bowl victory over Auburn.

Frost’s experience at Nebraska serves as a cautionary tale, where despite high hopes from fans and a storied history, the results failed to match expectations. As he embarks on this new chapter with UCF, there is an opportunity for renewal and a chance to replicate his previous success. The Knights will be looking to Frost to reignite their competitive edge in the college football landscape, emphasizing the potential for positive outcomes ahead.
