A concerning trend, dubbed the “Chromebook Challenge,” has emerged on social media platforms like TikTok, leading to significant alarm within schools nationwide. The challenge encourages students to insert metal objects into the USB ports of school-provided Chromebooks, which can cause severe electrical issues, including short-circuits and potentially hazardous smoke.
Henrietta Fire Chief Mark Cholach has labeled the trend as “dumb and dangerous,” emphasizing the substantial risks associated with tampering with these devices. He highlighted the dangers, stating, “The battery overloads and it shorts out, and there is a potential for explosions.” Chief Cholach also pointed out the toxic nature of the smoke emitted, warning that it is far more hazardous than typical smoke, given that it involves lithium-ion batteries.
The Rochester Fire Department responded recently to an incident involving a smoking Chromebook at Exploration Elementary Charter School for Science & Technology. Fortunately, only one person required treatment due to smoke inhalation, and the cause is under investigation, though it remains uncertain if this incident is linked to the ongoing trend.
In an effort to raise awareness, the Baldwinsville Central School District had to evacuate a high school when a student tampered with a Chromebook, causing it to smoke and activate the fire alarm. Similarly, the Spencerport Central School District issued notifications to families regarding isolated reports of students engaging in this challenge.
While the Rush-Henrietta Central School District has not seen a rampant issue with the trend, officials have taken proactive measures by communicating potential repair and replacement costs to families. Chief Cholach underscored the severity of the matter, indicating potential liability for students who participate in the challenge, especially if others are harmed.
He reiterated the crucial safety advice, instructing that if anyone encounters a smoking Chromebook, they should evacuate immediately and report it to the fire department. The Rochester Fire Department has issued a reminder to be cautious with any lithium-powered devices, advising against damaging them as this can lead to dangerous fires or toxic smoke.
Shannon Leonard, the operations director at Exploration Elementary, praised the quick response from both their team and local emergency services during the recent incident, ensuring the safety of the school community. Moving forward, the school plans to enhance education on digital responsibility and implement further training for staff to recognize warning signs of hazardous behavior.
