Scarlett Johansson to Star in Radical Exorcist Reimagining Directed by Mike Flanagan

Scarlett Johansson is set to take the lead in a groundbreaking new interpretation of “The Exorcist,” a film that is being described as a “radical new take” on the iconic horror franchise. Known for her recent directorial debut with “Eleanor the Great,” Johansson is diving into the horror genre with this highly anticipated project.

The forthcoming film will introduce an original storyline that exists within “The Exorcist” universe, separate from the 2023 release “The Exorcist: Believer,” which starred Leslie Odom Jr. The original film, released in 1973 and directed by William Friedkin, followed Chris MacNeil, portrayed by Ellen Burstyn, as she sought help from two priests to exorcise her daughter, played by Linda Blair, who had become possessed. The classic film was both a commercial and critical success, grossing $441 million and winning two Academy Awards.

This new installment is being produced by a collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, founded by Jason Blum and James Wan, alongside Morgan Creek, which has been involved with four previous “Exorcist” films, and the Hollywood powerhouse Universal. Acclaimed horror director Mike Flanagan, known for his work on “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass,” will helm the film, which is slated to be filmed in New York City. Flanagan is also adapting Stephen King’s “Carrie” into a new television series for Amazon MGM Studios.

In a statement, Flanagan expressed his excitement about Johansson joining the project, saying, “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this ‘Exorcist’ film.”

The collaboration comes after Johansson’s successful box office performance in “Jurassic World Rebirth,” which grossed over $850 million globally, making her one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood. With a remarkable career that has seen her films earning over $15.4 billion worldwide, she is recognized as the highest-grossing lead actress of all time.

Flanagan will not only direct but will also write the screenplay through his production company, Red Room Pictures, with Alexandra Magistro serving as an executive producer. David Robinson is producing for Morgan Creek, while Blum and Ryan Turek are overseeing production for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.

This new chapter in “The Exorcist” franchise signifies a unique opportunity for both Johansson and Flanagan to bring fresh perspectives to a beloved classic, promising to captivate audiences once again with a blend of innovative storytelling and thrilling horror.
