Scandal, Sisterhood, and Social Media: Inside “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives”

The new Hulu series “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” explores the lives of eight Mormon influencers grappling with the consequences of a major sex scandal that disrupted their #MomTok community.

In 2021, as the public began to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of women known as #MomTok gained immense popularity on social media with their oversized Stanley cups, matching workout attire, and synchronized dance routines to catchy pop tracks. However, the seemingly wholesome image of this group of Utah-based Mormon TikTok stars fell apart in 2022 when a scandal erupted. Taylor Frankie Paul, a prominent figure in #MomTok, revealed her decision to divorce her husband after they engaged in “soft swinging” with other couples in their circle.

The scandal generated significant attention, leading to detailed discussions on Reddit, media coverage, and widespread cheating allegations. Now, several members of this group are transitioning their tumultuous narrative from digital platforms to television.

“The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” is an eight-episode reality TV series that debuted on Hulu on Friday. It follows these influencers as they deal with the fallout from the scandal, which includes mending friendships, attempting to reshape their public personas, securing lucrative brand partnerships, and competing for social dominance within the group. The series presents a fascinating blend of internet culture, faith, and drama, reminiscent of “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” intermingled with themes from “Mean Girls.”
