The Government has allocated over $36,000 to improve rural accessibility with the successful completion of the Sawani footcrossing project in Naitasiri. The initiative was officially handed over to Sawani Village by the outgoing Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka. During the handover, he underscored the significance of the new footcrossing in enhancing transportation and bolstering community readiness, particularly during natural disasters.

Mr. Ditoka praised the collaboration among local churches, the vanua, and government entities, which played a vital role in the project’s implementation. The new footcrossing is aimed at facilitating movement within the community, with a focus on benefiting the village’s women, children, the elderly, and those with disabilities. This initiative will directly impact 349 villagers across 60 households.

The minister also emphasized the ministry’s commitment to actively engaging with rural communities to pinpoint their essential development needs. He reiterated the Government’s dedication to addressing these needs and enhancing the effectiveness of its programs through strong village leadership. Mr. Ditoka affirmed that similar projects will continue to be pursued across the country.

This investment not only improves critical infrastructure but also fosters community connections and resilience, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to rural development that aims to empower local residents and prepare them for future challenges.
