Savusavu Hospital is addressing significant challenges in delivering essential healthcare services following a year without an X-ray facility. During this time, patients have been required to travel to Labasa Hospital or pay for private imaging services to obtain necessary diagnostic care.
Penioni Ravunawa, the Assistant Health Minister, provided insights into the situation, explaining that the reinstatement of X-ray services is contingent upon completing a vital electrical upgrade to the hospital’s current power supply. He described a clear plan for the implementation of a new X-ray unit, with options for either floor-mounted or ceiling-mounted configurations depending on the requirements of the electrical upgrades.
“The necessary electrical upgrade is scheduled for this financial year,” Mr. Ravunawa stated. He expressed hope that once the upgrade is completed, the new X-ray system could be put in place, thereby restoring reliable diagnostic services and improving healthcare access for the local community.
In the interim, vulnerable populations, particularly expectant mothers, the elderly, accident victims, and individuals with suspected fractures, are facing the challenge of long travels and increased costs for basic imaging services. The Assistant Health Minister assured that the ministry is committed to implementing safe and gradual improvements to healthcare services while providing support for frontline healthcare workers.
These ongoing efforts highlight a dedication to enhancing healthcare infrastructure, with the ultimate goal of better serving the community and relieving some of the current burdens placed on patients.
