Authorities in Savusavu are issuing warnings about unlicensed individuals posing as real estate agents, jeopardizing property transactions and exploiting unsuspecting buyers. Consultations in the area have uncovered instances of locals, including taxi drivers, facilitating property sales without proper credentials.

Shivani Dutt, Compliance Officer for the Real Estate Licensing Board (REALB), emphasized that only three licensed agents are recognized in Savusavu, despite reports of widespread illegal activity. Dutt underscored the legal ramifications, stating that anyone interacting with an unlicensed agent could face dire consequences if transactions go awry, as these individuals are not registered and thus untraceable.

Licensed real estate agent Aren Nunnik expressed concern over these bogus agents, particularly as they target tourists who may not be familiar with local property laws. He reported instances where tourists have unwittingly given money to fraudulent individuals, only to discover that properties were not for sale or that the supposed agents were not legitimate.

This issue not only presents significant risks for individual buyers but also threatens to tarnish Fiji’s reputation as a secure destination for investment and retirement. With Savusavu being a favored locale among foreign buyers, the ongoing presence of unlicensed agents could deter potential investments, highlighting the urgent need for regulatory enforcement to protect both buyers and the integrity of the real estate market in Fiji.
