The Fijian Media Association (FMA) and the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) have jointly announced that the 8th Pacific Media Summit is scheduled to take place from September 21 to 25, 2026, in Savusavu, Fiji. This biennial event will convene an estimated 150 to 200 media professionals from throughout the Pacific region, including journalists, editors, media executives, academics, development partners, donors, and key stakeholders.
The summit will operate under the theme “Reaching the Remote: Media and Digital Innovation for a Connected Blue Pacific.” This theme highlights the critical need for reliable information access in remote and underserved Pacific communities through strong and independent media. It emphasizes the importance of regional collaboration, the establishment of resilient communication systems capable of withstanding disasters, and the investment in emerging technologies to foster a more connected and inclusive Blue Pacific.
This gathering aims to create dialogue and collaboration on crucial media development issues in the Blue Pacific. PINA President Kalafi Moala expressed the significance of the summit, stating, “The Pacific Media Summit continues to be our region’s most important platform for strengthening media solidarity and innovation, ensuring that even the most remote communities are connected, informed and heard.”
In addition, FMA General Secretary Stanley Simpson welcomed the chance for Fiji to host this important regional meeting. He looks forward to exploring how media and digital innovation can better support island communities and advance connectivity across the region.
The format of the 2026 Summit will include panel discussions, keynote addresses, technical workshops, and networking sessions that will address various topics, such as digital transformation, media sustainability, press freedom, climate reporting, and inclusive storytelling across remote island communities. Recent history shows the significance of rotating the summit among various Pacific Island nations, as exemplified by the most recent summit held in Niue in September 2024.
As the date approaches, further details regarding registration, program specifics, and partnership opportunities will be released, creating an anticipation for a well-rounded and impactful gathering. The summit aims to reinforce the vital role of independent media in sustainable development, echoing the commitment of the Pacific media community to adapt to evolving challenges and ensure that every voice is heard in the Blue Pacific.
